Reading a monitor spec sheet without being misled

Monitors are where marketing numbers diverge from experience the most. A few things are worth knowing before you compare two panels on price.

Response time is quoted at its best case

A quoted one-millisecond response time is usually measured on the fastest possible transition with overdrive at maximum, a setting that often introduces visible overshoot. The number you actually live with is the average across all transitions. Panels that measure well on that average look clean in motion; panels that do not will smear regardless of the figure on the box.

Panel type still sets the character

IPS gives you the widest viewing angles and reliable colour, at the cost of contrast and some backlight glow in dark scenes. VA gives deep blacks and strong contrast but can smear on dark transitions. OLED and QD-OLED give you true blacks and instant pixel response, which is why they look so different in person, with brightness and burn-in as the trade-offs to weigh.

Contrast ratio is the honest number

Ignore dynamic contrast figures entirely. The static contrast ratio is what determines whether a dark scene looks black or grey in a normally lit room. This is the specification that most affects how expensive a panel looks, and it is the one least discussed.

Refresh rate you can actually feed

A 240Hz panel only helps if your graphics card can push frames near that rate in the games you play. For most people at 1440p, a 144Hz or 165Hz panel paired with a mid-tier card is a better balanced purchase than a higher refresh panel the card cannot fill.

Come and look at it
